Why BigOnKorea.com?

When I started this blog to capture my time studying abroad in South Korea, I wanted a name that reflected both my personal identity and my enthusiasm for sharing my experiences. My nickname is Big Josh (given to me by friends, not chosen), and BigOnKorea.com felt like the perfect way to combine that with my deep interest in and appreciation for Korea.

It’s a play on words, both a nod to my nickname and a way to express how much my study of Korea has meant to me. This blog is where I share my experiences, insights, and memories from living in Korea, hoping to offer something valuable to anyone curious about the country.

Where I am living

I am currently in Seoul, South Korea, (and more specifically, Sinchon) a vibrant city that serves as the heart of the country’s culture, economy, and history. With a population of 25 million in its metropolitan area, Seoul is the second-largest metro area in the world, just behind Tokyo. It is located approximately 35 miles south of the North Korean border.

The Korean peninsula extends off the eastern coast of China and sits just west of Japan, making it a unique cultural and historical crossroads in East Asia.

My Studies

I am studying at Yonsei University, one of South Korea’s most prestigious and selective research institutions. Founded in 1885, Yonsei has a strong academic reputation and a dynamic international student community. My time here allows me to experience Korea’s rich culture firsthand, and I’ll be sharing those experiences here on the blog.

I will be in Seoul until sometime in July and will return to Seattle. This will complete my studies to earn my bachelors degree in Political Science with an emphasis on Korea Studies at the University of Washington.
